The University of Pennsylvania’s Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services announced today that COSY (Cognitive Operational Systems, LLC,) has moved into 2412 sq. ft. in the Pennovation Works Office Building, having outgrown their Inventor Garage in the Pennovation Center.

COSY, a spinoff of Penn's GRASP Laboratory, was co-founded in 2014 by Jonas Cleveland and Kostas Daniilidis, PhD, for leveraging research to develop industry products in artificial intelligence. COSY’s success has necessitated a move to larger space, found nearby in the Office Building. By remaining on the Pennovation Works campus, COSY can continue to participate in the collaborative, creative community that has grown there over the past year.

COSY is one of the first innovators to occupy the Pennovation Works Office Building, now open for leasing, following a $4M renovation.  Part of the University’s Master Plan for the Pennovation Works site, the Office Building offers 23,100 rentable sq. ft. “The progression of COSY from a Inventor  Garage in the Pennovation Center to a tenant in the Office Building is a model of our goal of supporting and nurturing entrepreneurs at Pennovation Works. We imagine a facility where someone with a brilliant idea can start off at a coworking desk, grow into a garage or a shared lab space, and then eventually grow out of the Pennovation Center and move into larger space still at Pennovation Works,” says Anne Papageorge, Vice President, Facilities & Real Estate Services at Penn.

In addition to the 24,000 gross sq. ft. Office Building, Papageorge notes that the University has just completed a feasibility study on the existing Lab Building at Pennovation Works that could be renovated to provide 69,000 sq. ft. of lab, office and conference space.

“The team has enjoyed the Pennovation facilities. The camaraderie between companies is a plus,” said Jonas Cleveland.  “I am happy for our new facilities, and I am excited for all of the COSY team members to be in a larger space together.”

Reaching beyond their space on the core campus, Penn’s academic departments are adding to the activity at Pennovation Works. Penn Design has leased 750 sq. ft. for research space in the Office Building, and Penn Engineering has leased 2,386 sq. ft. for use as laboratory and flex space for research of robotics, hydraulics, dynamical systems theory, and the Internet of Things (IoT).
